The official state list of birds seen in the U.S. state of Colorado includes 498 species, based on the checklist of (Colorado Field Ornithologists ). Only birds that are considered to have established, self-sustaining, wild populations in Colorado are included on this list. This excludes birds that are considered probable escapees, although they may have been sighted flying free in Colorado. Introduced species that are not native to North America, but were brought to this continent by human activity, are marked on this list as (I). This list is presented in taxonomic order and follows the Checklist of North American Birds, 7th Edition, American Ornithologists' Union, 1998, updated through the 53rd Supplement, 2012 (Auk 129(3):572-588, 2012).
